Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between underglaze and regular glaze?

Underglaze is applied under a transparent glaze and fired with it, while regular glaze is the top layer. KIWI underglaze gives you flexibility - you can apply it to raw clay before bisque firing, or to bisque fired ceramics before glazing. The colors are most intense when covered with transparent glaze and fired to cone 4-5 (approx. 1180°C). Without glaze you get a beautiful matte, velvety surface that is perfect for sculptural works.

How many coats do I need to get good color saturation with KIWI underglaze?

KIWI Underglaze is designed for flexible application: 1 coat gives a transparent effect where you can see through the color, 2 coats give semi-opaque color, and 3 coats give full, solid color saturation. Apply as thinly as possible in layers for best results. The colors intensify during firing and are most vibrant when covered with transparent glaze and fired to cone 4-5.

Is KIWI underglaze food safe after firing?

Yes! KIWI underglaze is completely safe for food when properly fired and covered with a durable, transparent glaze. The products are 100% lead-free and meet all safety requirements. If you have chosen a matte finish without an overglaze, we do not recommend using for food and drink, as the surface may be more susceptible to scratches. What firing temperatures work with KIWI underglaze?

KIWI Underglaze is flexible when it comes to firing. You can fire it at cone 06 (1000°C) to "harden" the color before glazing, or go straight to the glaze firing. For best color results, fire to cone 4-5 (around 1180°C) with a transparent glaze over. The underglaze can withstand everything from cone 04 to cone 9 (1050-1260°C), so it works with most glazes and firing programs. Want a matte finish without glazing? Fire to cone 06 or higher for a beautiful, velvety surface.
